Plumbing students at Eastlands College of Technology workshop

Plumbing history dates back a thousand years, with lead and copper being the oldest traditional plumbing materials among the ancient Egyptians. Plumbers were originally seen as workers of lead with the word Plumber taken from the Latin word “Plumbum”.

Rapid industrialization and the increased demand for improved health and sanitation have prompted technological advancement in the area of plumbing, leading to the development of effective and efficient plumbing systems.

The role of Plumbers in society cannot be underestimated. A journeyman plumber is responsible for water supply and sanitation; installing pipework for gas supplies for cooking and heating; fixing sheet metal weatherings to roofs; and installing rainwater collection and disposal systems, among other tasks.

In Kenya, many young people are encouraged to pursue academic paths such as medicine or engineering while overlooking trades such as plumbing.
