Plumbing: A Viable and Stable Career Path for Kenyan Youths

Plumbing students at Eastlands College of Technology workshop

Plumbing history dates back a thousand years, with lead and copper being the oldest traditional plumbing materials among the ancient Egyptians. Plumbers were originally seen as workers of lead with the word Plumber taken from the Latin word “Plumbum”.

Rapid industrialization and the increased demand for improved health and sanitation have prompted technological advancement in the area of plumbing, leading to the development of effective and efficient plumbing systems.

The role of Plumbers in society cannot be underestimated. A journeyman plumber is responsible for water supply and sanitation; installing pipework for gas supplies for cooking and heating; fixing sheet metal weatherings to roofs; and installing rainwater collection and disposal systems, among other tasks.

In Kenya, many young people are encouraged to pursue academic paths such as medicine or engineering while overlooking trades such as plumbing. However, plumbing is an essential skill that is in demand all over the world, including in Kenya. Eastlands College of Technology has embraced a dual training system that integrates both theoretical and practical courses in plumbing and provides students with hands-on experience.

One reason why many Kenyan youths should study plumbing is that the job market is strong for plumbers. This presents an opportunity for enthusiastic plumbers seeking employment. With proper training, a plumber can earn a sustainable income that supports themselves and their families.

Another reason why many Kenyan youths should study plumbing is that it provides career stability. Unlike many other technical professions, plumbers will always have work to do. After all, plumbing is a necessity in every building, from homes to hospitals to offices to schools. This means that plumbers can expect consistent employment and income. Additionally, as the construction industry continues to grow, there will be a greater demand for plumbing services, which could lead to an increase in demand for qualified plumbers.

Lastly, studying at Eastlands College of Technology provides a unique opportunity to learn through a dual training model. Students in plumbing courses have access to theoretical courses that provide a foundational understanding of plumbing concepts, as well as practical courses that provide hands-on experience. The dual training model provides an excellent balance between theory and practice that enables students to apply what they learn in real-world situations

In conclusion, many Kenyan youths should undertake plumbing studies because it presents a viable and stable career path. With the increase in construction across the country, the demand for plumbers continues to grow. Eastlands College of Technology provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn through a dual training system that incorporates training at the college and in the industry.
