After the Easter holidays, Eastlands College of Technology students resumed their training, this time not in ECT but in various industries where they had been allocated. This is the crucial part of the Dual Training System whereby a student having gathered enough theory and practice in the College is now handed over to the industry to have hands on practical experience. They were assigned different industries depending on the courses they take. On average the time taken in the industry for job training should be more than 50% of the total training duration for a course.
The College itself also did act as an industry to several of our students pursuing Welding & Fabrication and Automotive Engineering courses. Welding and Fabrication students are currently being engaged in a project involving production of metallic beds. The project manager, Mr. Joseph Ndung’u, charged with oversight of the entire production process said that they are to make fifteen good beds which are to be used by visiting students from Viaro School, Spain. They will be on a work camp in Kenya in the month of June.
“Four of my students are the ones I am working with to see to it that this project comes to a successful end”, said Joseph.Another group of five Automotive Engineering students with a bias in automobile bodyworks were retained by the institution and are currently in a project involving painting of a newly constructed welding cage. It is a tedious process but our students are doing it with ease owing to the training they have undergone in the college. On Monday 8th May 2017, five students were picked by General Motors (GM) East Africa to participate in the DTS.
They include: Radovan Mswahili, Evans Roy and Anthony Kaguai. Two more have been slotted in at Jacaranda Motors Engineering for the same. Before the end of May, Desbro Engineering will have taken five of our students pursuing Plumbing and welding courses in the College. While in the industry, our students are to be treated like any other employee and thus their remuneration is catered for as per the contract entered between them and the company. Aside from the above companies, our students are also absorbed by the following companies too for DTS: Simba colt Motors, AutoExpress Kenya and Double M.
